Australian spelling follows British habits: colour, centre, organise and travelled. One well-known exception is the Australian Labor Party, which spells Labor without a u. Dates run day first, so 3/4 means the third of April. If overseas viewers will hear the script, write the date in words.

Place names catch voices out. Locals say Cairns much like "cans", Melbourne ends in a short "bun", and Canberra is closer to "Can-bra". Many towns carry Aboriginal names, such as Woolloomooloo, Wagga Wagga or Toowoomba. Preview each one, and if a voice gets it wrong, set the reading once in the pronunciation dictionary.

Australians shorten words and add an o or an ie: arvo for afternoon, servo for a petrol station, ute for a utility vehicle, sunnies for sunglasses. A little of this makes a retail or tourism ad sound local. Too much sounds like a caricature to Australian ears. For a cheerful sales read, try an Emotional voice with the Happy preset.

Preview the line first. If a number, date or abbreviation comes out wrong, write it the way it should be spoken, or add it to the pronunciation dictionary, which is on every plan. One entry fixes that word across the whole project.

In spelling and much of its vocabulary it sits closer to British English: footpath, petrol, mobile phone. American words such as truck and cookie are common too, and some words are purely Australian, like doona for a duvet or thongs for flip-flops. The accent is its own, so an Australian voice will not pass for a London one.

Australian English changes less from city to city than British English does, so Sydney and Perth speakers sound alike. The bigger split is between broad, general and cultivated styles. Broad sounds rural and relaxed, while cultivated sits closer to British. Play several samples on the cards above and pick the style that suits your script.
