Basque, or euskara, is unrelated to Spanish, French or any other living language. Scripts for schools, media and public bodies use Euskara Batua, the unified standard that the Basque language academy, Euskaltzaindia, began building in 1968. Its spelling is regular. Tx sounds like ch, x like sh, and tz and ts are two distinct sounds. Native words avoid c, q, v, w and y.

Basque builds meaning with endings, so one noun takes many forms: etxe (house), etxean (in the house), etxetik (from the house), etxera (to the house). Names take endings too, as in Donostiara (to Donostia) or Mikelek. Words can get long, so never break one across lines, and preview personal and brand names with an ending attached.

Counting goes in twenties: hogei is 20, berrogei 40 and hirurogei 60. Dates run from year to day: 2026ko urriaren 13a. Use the Basque forms of place names, such as Donostia and Gasteiz, in a Basque script. If a brand or a Spanish surname comes out wrong, set its reading in the pronunciation dictionary.

Yes. The Free plan costs $0 and includes every voice, with a one-time allowance of 2,500 credits, about 2,500 words. It is for personal and evaluation use.

Yes. Basque has 1 male and 3 female voices. Use the gender filter above the voice list and try a few with your own first line.

Yes, on a paid plan: paid plans include commercial rights, and the Free plan is for personal and evaluation use only. Starter costs $5 for the first month, then $19 a month.

Preview the line first. If a number, date or abbreviation comes out wrong, write it the way it should be spoken, or add it to the pronunciation dictionary, which is on every plan. One entry fixes that word across the whole project.

Not at all. Basque is a language isolate with its own grammar, word order and vocabulary, so Spanish speakers cannot follow it without learning it. Its sounds are fairly easy for Spanish ears, but the words are not. Write or commission the script in Basque rather than translating word for word, and use the Spanish page for Spanish.

Basque counts in twenties above twenty. Thirty is hogeita hamar, twenty and ten, and ninety-nine is laurogeita hemeretzi, eighty and nineteen. Figures are fine in a script, but preview long numbers, years and phone numbers. If one is read in a way you did not intend, write it out in words.
