Latvian marks long vowels with a macron, ā, ē, ī and ū, and length changes meaning. Softened consonants carry a comma: ģ, ķ, ļ and ņ. Messages are often typed without these marks, with sh for š or aa for ā. A voice cannot rebuild what was dropped, so restore every mark before you press Play.

Stress falls on the first syllable in almost every Latvian word, which keeps long words easy to follow. Nouns change their ending by case, so Rīga becomes Rīgā (in Riga) and Rīgas (of Riga). Dates run from year to day, as in 2026. gada 18. novembris, and numbers use a decimal comma and a space between thousands. Write a date in words if the points are read oddly.

Pick tu or jūs at the start and keep it. Tu suits friends, children and casual social clips; jūs is the safe choice for customers and public notices, and letters often write it as Jūs. English is common in tech and business talk, so preview brand names and add any misread one to the pronunciation dictionary.

They are the only two living Baltic languages, but speakers cannot easily follow each other. Latvian stresses the first syllable, while Lithuanian stress moves around. Latvian marks long vowels with macrons, while Lithuanian uses a different set of marks. Write a separate script for each and use the matching voice.

Latvian spells foreign names the way they sound and gives them Latvian endings. Shakespeare is Šekspīrs, and John Smith appears as Džons Smits. A voice reads these forms with Latvian sounds. If your brand must keep its original spelling, check the reading and fix it in the pronunciation dictionary[[C067]].
