Sri Lankan Tamil is spoken in Jaffna and the north, on the east coast at Trincomalee and Batticaloa, and in Colombo. Indian Tamil listeners spot it within a sentence. Yes is ஓம், the verb for talking is கதை rather than பேசு, and a boy in Jaffna is a பெடியன். Choose these voices for Sri Lankan listeners and the diaspora.

The spoken forms have no fixed spelling. Jaffna speakers say இண்டைக்கு for today and எண்டு where Indian speech says னு, and polite requests end in ங்கோ, as in வாங்கோ. Write them as your audience says them, keep one spelling throughout, and preview. Many Sri Lankan Muslims also speak Tamil at home, with words of their own.

Not every Sri Lankan Tamil sounds like Jaffna. Families on the hill-country tea estates came from South India in the colonial era, and their speech is closer to Indian Tamil. In Colombo, Tamil borrows Sinhala and English words freely. Sinhala place names such as Kurunegala are worth a listen, and a misread one can go in the pronunciation dictionary.

Yes, on a paid plan: paid plans include commercial rights, and the Free plan is for personal and evaluation use only. Starter costs $5 for the first month, then $19 a month.

Preview the line first. If a number, date or abbreviation comes out wrong, write it the way it should be spoken, or add it to the pronunciation dictionary, which is on every plan. One entry fixes that word across the whole project.

The script and written standard are shared, so a formal text reads much the same in both countries. Speech differs more: pronunciation, everyday words and polite endings set Sri Lankan Tamil apart, and Jaffna forms often sound old-fashioned to Indian ears.

For most of those families it is the sound of home. Community radio, temple notices and wedding invitations in Toronto or London are typical uses. Younger listeners raised abroad mix in English, so keep sentences short and preview each mixed line.
