Assamese is written in the Eastern Nagari script it shares with Bengali, but two letters set it apart. Assamese writes ra as ৰ, with a diagonal stroke where Bengali র has a dot, and it has ৱ for a wa sound. Text copied from a Bengali source or typed on a Bengali layout often carries র, which looks like a spelling mistake to an Assamese reader.

Spelling and sound drift apart. স, শ and ষ are usually said with a throaty sound, like the ch in Scottish loch, so অসম is said roughly Oxom. চ sounds close to an English s. Write words in standard spelling rather than respelling them by ear. If a person or place name is read wrongly, fix it in the pronunciation dictionary.

Choose how to address your listener. আপুনি is polite and right for customers, elders and announcements; তুমি is familiar, and তই is only for close friends or children. Verbs change with the choice, as in আহক (please come) and আহা (come). Guwahati speech mixes in English and Hindi words, so decide how many to keep.

Preview the line first. If a number, date or abbreviation comes out wrong, write it the way it should be spoken, or add it to the pronunciation dictionary, which is on every plan. One entry fixes that word across the whole project.

No. Assamese and Bengali share a script family and many words, but they are separate languages with their own grammar, sounds and spelling. Assamese writes ৰ and ৱ and has its own verb endings. A Bengali script stays Bengali whichever voice reads it, so write in Assamese.

Both are used. Assamese digits such as ১, ২ and ৩ appear widely in print, while Western digits are common online. Choose one style for the whole script. For years, phone numbers and dates, writing the number in words leaves no doubt about how it is read. Preview any figure.
